Deep In A Dream is our second recording and in many repects this new release is a direct
descendant of our previous offering, "The Cuckoo's Blues" named, by the
way, in recognition of our long association with the Cuckoo's Nest
Restaurant of Old Saybrook, Connecticut, where we have had a steady gig
for all of twelve years now. Deep In A Dream does, however, have some special features which will make it a novel and unique musical experience for our long-time fans and for new listeners alike. One example is my original, "Hail, Bop!" Here I pay homage to the revolutionary but enduring style created by jazz giants Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie while simultaneously commemorating a striking natural phenomenon observed a few years ago in the heavens. True to a time-honored convention of the bebop idiom, "Hail, Bop!" ingeniously fits a complex new melody to the harmonies of a familiar old standard. Listen carefully. If you don't immediately recognize the source of the chord changes think celestial! Two numbers on this album have their genesis in the exposure Charlie enjoyed to the culture of Ethiopia during the course of his service there as a Peace Corps volunteer. One is a short original composition entitled "Tizaega." It places a variety of characteristic Ethiopian melodic elements within the context of a twenty-four bar blues. The other is "Oo-oota Ayaskeffam," a melody which, though first made popular in Addis Ababa by the legendary vocalist Tilahun Gessesse forty years ago, has never lost its sad and haunting appeal, the essence of which I try to capture in my solo. We wish to express our gratitude to the staff of the Cuckoo's Nest and to all our loyal fans. Special thanks go to Cuckoo's Nest owners Jim Fitzpatrick and Pete McNeil for their unwavering support; and to Norman Johnson of Manor Recording, whose skilled, careful work and co-operation have made possible the presentation of our music in the best possible light.
